«Good morning, Sophia!» nodded a woman from the balcony. «Hi, Max! How’s the guarding?» Sophia waved. And Max walked beside, evenly, not hurrying.
He seemed to sense the rhythm of her wheels. And matched it. People couldn’t believe this dog was once considered dangerous.
Now he hugged kids, lay beside the elderly, guarded Sophia at every turn. But only she knew what he was like at night. When the apartment quieted, and Max came to her bed, lay beside, and sighed.
Long. Heavy. He remembered too, he was afraid too.
But now he wasn’t alone. «We survived together!» Sophia whispered, stroking his head. And that’s the main thing.
A month had passed since they became a family. On that very day, at school, the teacher asked the kids to draw what changed their life. Someone drew a sibling, a bike, and Sophia drew a cage.
An empty cage. And beside it her wheelchair. And a big dog with smart eyes.
«This is Max,» she said. «He was alone. I was alone too.
But now we’re together. And we’ll make it.» The teacher looked at the drawing for a long time.
Then wiped his eyes and put it on the board. «Sometimes the most wounded become our saviors,» he said. That same evening, Sophia and her mom went to the shelter…
