Michael: «One day he will be gone, and I will be free. Free to reclaim what belongs to me by right. The inheritance will pass to me, as it should have been from the beginning. And if it takes a lifetime of waiting, watching him suffer, then so be it.»
Andrew: But what inheritance? Did she say what she was talking about?
Michael: This is the scariest part. She was convinced that I carried something powerful within me, something she could inherit if only I were weakened enough. But in the last entry, she finally… finally explains it, and it’s the most horrible thing of all.
(Michael paused, his gaze becoming distant.)
Michael: «My mother was a healer,» she wrote. But my blood was cursed. Michael doesn’t know, but I needed him to lift this curse, to displace it from me into him. I needed his strength to survive, and he was foolish enough to let me. I deliberately became his wife; my mother chose him as the vessel.»
(Andrew covered his mouth with his hand, his eyes widening in horror.)
Andrew: So… she believed that this way she would rid herself of her curse?
Michael: Yes, she slowly poisoned me, thinking that this way she was lifting the curse from herself, complete madness.
(Michael slowly closed the diary.)
Michael: I loved her, Dad. Even after all this, some part of me still loved her. But now… now I don’t know if I can ever truly free myself from her or from this curse she left behind.
Andrew: Son… I’ll help you. Your wife was sick, but now you’re free. Now we know why you’ve been ill all this time; it’s no curse, it’s all your wife.
(A couple of days later, Michael met with his father again, holding new pages from the diary in his hand.)
Michael: Dad, I found more. More pages… she hid them in a secret compartment of the box.
(Andrew, sitting across from him, felt his heart freeze. He had hoped they had uncovered all of Emily’s darkness.)
Andrew: What else is there, son?..
