On Friday, Ariana had a short day at the office. As soon as the clock struck the end of work hours, her female colleagues grabbed their bags and rushed home. Ariana’s computer let her down. The old machine took forever to shut down. In the end, the young woman left the office last.
Her husband couldn’t pick her up from work. His boss scheduled an important meeting for the evening. Andrew had to be there no matter what. The boss doesn’t make any decisions without her spouse. It’s odd, of course, but Andrew seems to like it.
Ariana decided not to call a cab but to take the bus and stroll a bit around the neighborhood. Because of that, she got home a little later than planned. When Ariana entered the apartment, she thought she smelled unfamiliar perfume in the hallway. The woman sniffed. A second later, the scent vanished as if it had never been there.
Ariana looked around for some reason. Everything else was as usual; nothing had changed. Even the large gold earrings carelessly left by the mirror were in place. «This definitely isn’t thieves!» she said aloud jokingly.
After a while, she forgot about everything. She leisurely took a shower, dried her hair, and went to heat up dinner. In the fridge, she noticed an almost empty pack of sausages. Just yesterday it was full, and today only five were left. Ariana was surprised that her husband, stopping by home, had lunch with sausages instead of lasagna and crab salad. That wasn’t very like Andrew.
Anyway, it was his choice. Ariana set the table and sat down to eat. Andrew came back late and refused food. The meeting was at a restaurant, and he had a good snack there. His wife didn’t interrogate him about the sausages.
Over the next week, Ariana noticed several small things indicating that someone was in the apartment while they were away. Water drops appeared in the bathroom that weren’t there in the morning, bottles on the shelves changed positions, or her comb ended up on the floor. On the weekend, the couple went out of town. They returned only on Sunday evening. Ariana started throwing clothes into the washing machine and found it wet. They hadn’t been home for two days, but the drum looked like the wash had just finished recently…
