We’re here, she whispered into the woman’s ear, just a little longer. The pregnant wife groaned, clutching her belly. I can’t, I feel the baby coming.
You’ll make it, I swear you will. Leona pushed through the sliding glass doors shouting, help, somebody help us. Nurses rushed forward, gasps escaping them as they saw the sight.
A uniformed maid, Leona, carrying a wealthy woman in her arms, drenched in sweat, trembling, but unbroken. Put her here, a nurse ordered. Leona lowered her onto the stretcher with shaking arms, heart hammering, fear and hope colliding inside her chest.
Within minutes, the woman was wheeled into the delivery room. Leona tried to follow, but a nurse blocked her, family only. Leona’s chest heaved, she has no one else right now, please.
The nurse hesitated. Before she could respond, heavy footsteps pounded against the tiled floor. A tall man in a dark gray suit appeared, his sharp features twisted in shock, the millionaire husband.
What is going on? His voice was thunder. His eyes locked on his wife, pale and trembling on the stretcher. Then he saw Maid Leona, her uniform soaked, her arms red with strain, her face streaked with tears and sweat.
For one suspended moment, the world seemed to stop. He looked at his wife, then back at Leona, and something flickered in his gaze that no one expected. Not fury, not shame, awe.
You carried her? He asked, almost whispering. Leona swallowed, her voice hoarse. Yes, no one else moved, I couldn’t let her fall.
The man’s chest rose and fell. Slowly, he stepped aside and said, then you stay. You’ve earned that right.
The doctors didn’t argue. Minutes turned into an hour, the room echoing with cries, commands, prayers. Leona stood at the woman’s side, clutching her hand through every scream.
You’re not alone, Leona kept repeating. Push, fight, I’m here, we’re here. At last, a cry pierced the room, sharp, alive, undeniable, a baby’s cry…
