The Anderson family brought home their adopted daughter Sophia when she was merely three weeks old. They endured a lengthy delay before they could collect the infant from the medical center—eighteen months in total. Throughout that period, the pair gathered funds, settled payments with the appropriate individuals, and the process eventually advanced.
During the 1990s, such arrangements were far from uncommon. They invested a significant amount of cash, but the essential part was that their much-desired child had arrived at their residence at last. The adoptive guardians chose the name Sophia for the girl.
The biological mother had not provided any name for the baby. Robert and Linda had shared eight years of marriage. Their life was stable—they maintained a good rapport and enjoyed a comfortable existence by the standards of the time.
Yet Linda struggled endlessly with infertility. Overwhelmed by frustration, the duo opted for adoption as a solution. They geared up meticulously for this momentous commitment.
Robert and Linda bore a striking resemblance to each other. Each possessed pale blond locks and azure eyes. Occasionally, outsiders confused them for siblings.
They were determined that the child they adopted should blend seamlessly with their looks. Initially, the pair hoped to bring home a son. Agencies presented them with two infant boys.
However, both had dark tresses. Consequently, they declined, choosing to hold out for a light-haired option. To be exact, Linda was the one who pushed for this preference.
«I refuse to let the kid mature realizing he’s not truly ours,» she declared. «Should the locals discover the adoption, some well-meaning soul is bound to spill the beans.» Months drifted by without resolution.
«What sort of charade is this?» Robert chuckled as his spouse returned and extracted a bundled cloth from beneath her top. «There’s no humor in it for me,» Linda retorted sharply. «I want everyone nearby to observe me appearing expectant, eliminating any suspicions.»
Month by month, Linda’s simulated abdomen expanded proportionally. «At last, you’ve got your bundle of joy after all these years!» the senior residents celebrated on behalf of the household. November had arrived, bringing chillier weather.
Linda was mimicking the final phases of gestation. A full cushion now rested under her outerwear. Temperatures dropped sharply, and slick surfaces formed outdoors.
Linda trudged back from the market carrying a bulky sack. She lost her footing and tumbled clumsily onto her front. «If only every fall landed on something soft like this!» she grumbled while rising and dusting off.
«Goodness, I nearly had a heart attack seeing you land on your stomach!» A local woman emerged suddenly. «Are you alright? Head to the clinic immediately! The little one inside must be shaken up!» «I’m okay. Appreciate the worry, Aunt Margaret!»
«Allow me to assist you to the medical center. The bus is right here, only a couple of stops away.» «No clinic necessary, thank you, Aunt Margaret; I’ll head straight home.» «Cling to my arm; we’ll proceed cautiously to your place. Once there, I’ll summon emergency services. You must get examined; you can’t risk the infant’s well-being. You and Robert have anticipated this for ages!»
The woman clung persistently. «She’s impossible to detach,» Linda seethed internally. «Aunt Margaret, weren’t you headed to the market? For some meat, I assume?» «Yes, for meat.»
«They’re nearly out of stock over there. Hurry if you hope to snag some.» «Oh, I’ll dash! And you, Linda, be sure to contact medical help upon arriving home.» «I promise, Aunt Margaret, I absolutely will.»..
