«Andrew, sometimes I think that while we’re gone, someone comes into our apartment,» Ariana said thoughtfully. «How’s that?» asked her husband. «I don’t know,» the woman replied. «But that’s the feeling I’m getting.»
She told her husband about the oddities in the apartment she’d been noticing lately. «The spare keys are with my parents. But why would they drive across the whole city to us? To eat sausages and do laundry? Their machine is fine. This is extremely weird.»
«Possibly,» Andrew agreed. She thoughtfully rubbed her forehead. «Ari, maybe it’s just your imagination?» Andrew asked. «Lately, you’ve been coming home tired from work. It’s probably stress affecting you that way.»
«I don’t know,» Ariana waved her hand. «But someone used the machine.» «Ari, we used it,» Andrew replied. «In two days, it would have dried out,» she persisted.
Andrew sighed. He came home from work later than his wife, and it seemed to him that nothing in the apartment changed. «Do you suspect my mom?» the man asked. «Who else?»
«Ariana, dear, she went to visit a friend in another state three days ago. She physically couldn’t use our washer. And Dad even less so. For him, watching TV is more important than washing clothes or cooking.»
Ariana pondered again. If Helen really left, she couldn’t have come. Robert altogether sees no point in visiting the young ones. No, not because he’s a sensitive father. He simply doesn’t care how his younger son lives. The older one either, actually.
But he can at least brag about the older Michael. The man achieved great success in New York. He earns well, bought a brand-new expensive car, bought housing. Robert doesn’t tire of repeating how he respects Michael. As for Andrew, to his father, he’s a loser.
And no, the younger one doesn’t ask parents for money, isn’t unemployed, has no bad habits or legal problems. He never caused his parents trouble and doesn’t now. If help is needed, they always call Andrew, and he doesn’t refuse. Because he’s nearby, in this city.
Andrew has a good job, a car, and renovations in the apartment, but Robert doesn’t consider his second son’s achievements worthy of attention. Moreover, the father thinks the younger one hasn’t achieved anything.
The next day, Ariana noticed that her hair conditioner was completely gone. She definitely remembered that half the bottle was left before the trip. «Andrew, did you take my conditioner?» the woman asked…
«No,» her husband replied. «Are you looking for traces of ‘little green men’ again?» «I had half left, and now it’s at the bottom,» Ariana insisted.
Andrew sighed and looked at his wife with irritation. Her oddities scared him. The man was sure no one came into their apartment. It was simply impossible.
If it’s thieves, why don’t they take anything valuable? Shampoos and powder aren’t the biggest valuables in their apartment. If it’s Mom or Dad, then… it’s time to call a doctor for them. Why would two elderly people drive across the city to take a bath in their son’s house? Andrew couldn’t find a clear explanation for this…
