The air hummed with conversations, but she felt eyes on her. Olivia’s voice rang out again, sharp and sweet. «Emily, those watches, still wearing those old ones?»
Her group tittered, jewels glittering under chandeliers. Emily’s fingers touched the leather strap, a gift from her first deployment. «It suits me,» she said evenly.
She wouldn’t let them rattle her. At a quieter table, Emily sipped wine, overhearing whispers from Olivia’s group. «Same old Emily,» Sophia muttered.
«Still so plain. Her husband must be a nobody,» Isabella chimed in. No wonder she’s still working.
Their words stung, but Emily’s face remained impassive. Years leading troops in chaos had taught her to hide pain. She thought of Michael, his steady voice.
«You’re enough.» It gave her strength. The evening dragged, taunts growing bolder.
Sophia’s husband, Benjamin, approached in a impeccable suit with a condescending smile. «Emily, right? Sophia mentioned you.» «Still slaving away at some job?» His tone implied failure.
Emily met his gaze. «I serve in the Army; it’s fulfilling.» Benjamin blinked, then smirked.
«Army? Must be tough on your husband.» Emily’s smile didn’t waver. «We manage.» She didn’t elaborate, not to him.
Olivia approached, her sequined dress reflecting every light. «Emily, you didn’t say what your husband does?» Her voice was loud, drawing eyes. Emily replied calmly.
«Michael teaches military history at Westwood University.» Disappointment flickered on Olivia’s face. «A professor, how… quaint.»
The friends laughed softly, but Emily’s expression stayed firm. She’d faced worse than their petty jabs. Hostile zones, life-or-death risks.
This was trivial. As dinner ended, the moderator took the stage, his voice booming. «Let’s share memories.»
Emily stayed in her corner, watching old stories unfold. Olivia and her group dominated, recalling school triumphs while glossing over their cruelty. Emily’s thoughts drifted to Oakridge High.
Her tattered clothes, the scholarship she barely scraped by on, the library as sanctuary. Back then, she was invisible or, worse, a target. Now she was Colonel Emily Johnson.
But they didn’t know. Not yet. Isabella called out, her voice cutting the room.
«Emily, remember having just one sandwich for lunch every day?» The room froze. Eyes turned to Emily. Memories burned.
Hunger, shame, their laughter. She rose slowly, straight as steel. «I remember,» she said clearly.
«I ate what I could. I worked toward my dreams. That’s what matters.»
Silence fell. Olivia tried to joke. «Oh, Emily, just reminiscing!» But worry flashed in her eyes.
Emily’s heart pounded, but she stood firm. She wasn’t that cowardly girl anymore. Training had made her unbreakable.
Yet whispers continued. «She hasn’t changed,» someone muttered. «No ring, no real success,» another added.
Emily touched her ring finger. Her wedding band stayed home during missions. It meant too much.
She breathed deeply. Michael’s words echoed. «Show them who you are!» The moderator’s voice eased the tension.
«Time for the group photo! Spouses, join us!» Doors swung open, a murmur rippling through the crowd. Three men entered, their presence commanding. Impeccable suits, crisp postures, hawk-like gazes.
Emily glanced back, her pulse quickening. One met her eyes. His face hardened, then he saluted sharply.
«Colonel Emily Johnson, ma’am!» His voice thundered, cutting the room’s hum. The Grand Plaza Hotel ballroom hushed as the male greeting echoed. «Colonel Emily Johnson, ma’am!» Authority rang in his tone.
The other two joined, hands to foreheads in salute. «Brigadier Alexander Smith reporting, ma’am!» The first said, piercing blue eyes on Emily. «Brigadier Benjamin Davis, honor to serve, ma’am!» Added the second.
«Brigadier Lucas Martinez, ma’am!» Said the third. Their crisp suits and rigid poses screamed military precision. Emily’s heart skipped, but her face stayed calm.
She nodded slightly. «At ease, gentlemen; we’re off duty!» Her voice was steady, quiet power filling the room. The men relaxed, respect palpable.
The crowd froze, stunned. Olivia’s glass trembled in her hand, her sequined dress glittering as she paled, staring. «Colonel!» she whispered shakily.
Sophia’s mouth gaped, diamond earrings catching chandelier light. Isabella’s hand flew to her lips, stifling a gasp. Emily stood tall.
Her black dress was elegant in its simplicity. The leather-strap watch contrasted sharply with flashy accessories around. She hadn’t planned this, but fate had…
